Rants about ridiculous things. Raves about amazing stuff. Random crap about life.

Ten years ago today…

Friday, January 1st, 2010

- It was January 1, 2000.
- I was eighteen years old.
- I was working full-time at Java Jitters Espresso.
- I was nine days away from being the owner of my first brand-new car!
- I still lived at home, hence how I could afford the above-mentioned car.
- Bill Clinton was president of the U.S.
- I was single, not dating anyone, and liked it that way.
- I knew nothing about eating disorders beyond their definition.
- I drank Mountain Dew, and lots of it.
- We referred to the war in Iraq as Operation Desert Storm – from 1991.
- Most people still surfed the Internet using dial-up.
- I was nearly three months away from meeting Lisa in Denver and attending my first Avs game.
- I would take my first plane ride around the same time.
- I felt comfortable with where I was at in life. The younger I was, the more I had things figured out.
- I bought my first cell phone within the year.
- No one knew about Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Youtube, etc., because they didn’t exist!
- I had two cats, Misty and Lilly.
- We survived the Y2K bug without a scratch.
- On those same lines, I remember turning on my computer for the first time in 2000 and the date said it was January 1, 1980. I corrected it and that was that. No devastation!
- Rang in the new year with my mom, dad and sister. We got special champagne glasses that said “2000″ on the handle. My sister and I drank sparkling white grape juice.

Today…

- It is January 1, 2010.
- I am twenty eight years old.
- I am a full-time student at work part time at UW’s Student Media.
- I drive a 2004 Honda Civic.
- I live in Laramie with my guys, Patrick and Teddy.
- Barack Obama is president of the U.S.
- I am happily married.
- I was actively eating disordered from early 2001- late 2005. It’s been in remission since, but the thoughts never disappear. I suspect they never will.
- I drink diet soda, and lots of it.
- The war in Iraq has been making headlines almost daily since 2003 – and it’s still going.
- I don’t think I could live without cable Internet and WiFi.
- I have seen several Avalanche games, the most notable being game 7 of round 2 of the 2001 Stanley Cup playoffs and the night the Avs retired Patrick Roy’s jersey in 2003.
- I have flown several times, most recently to Phoenix in December.
- I feel dumber, slower and less decisive than I did at about half of my current age. I miss that fearless feeling of knowing that somehow, everything will be okay because I can handle whatever comes my way. The more I live, the less sure I am of that, and yet the challenges are greater.
- I own an iPhone and think it’s the best techy gadget I’ve bought…maybe ever.
- The Internet would be much less exciting without multiple logins on Facebook throughout the day, amusing YouTube videos, and Twittering useless details about life.
- I have one cat, Sir Teddy H. Bear. Misty died in 2006. Lilly is still kickin’, but she lives with my mom, dad and sister.
- We have endured 9/11, economic decline, President George W. Bush, and horrible top 40 music in the last decade, but we’ll be picking up the pieces from these events for some time.
- Let’s not forget the men and women that have left us over the last decade.
- I rang in the new year with Patrick and Teddy. We had a quite and somewhat uneventful celebration, but it was still wonderful.

Here’s to the next 10 years!
